Faustino Oro Becomes World’s Youngest International Master at 10 Years and 8 Months

Faustino Oro, a 10-year-old chess prodigy from Argentina, has made history by becoming the world’s youngest International Master. Surpassing the previous record held by Indian-origin American Abhimanyu Mishra, Faustino achieved this remarkable feat at the age of 10 years, eight months, and 16 days. He joins the ranks of only two other players, including Mishra and India’s R Praggnanandhaa, to achieve the title of International Master before the age of 11.

Oro’s journey into the world of chess began during the pandemic, where he honed his skills by watching YouTube videos. His rapid progress in the game has been nothing short of extraordinary, as he became the youngest player to surpass Elo ratings of 2200 and 2300, as well as the youngest to earn an IM norm. Nicknamed the ‘Messi of chess’ and ‘el pibe de oro’ (golden boy) in his home country, Faustino has also showcased his talent in online chess by breaking 3000 in blitz rating and even defeating Magnus Carlsen in a bullet game.

Supported by his parents who relocated to Spain to further his chess career, Faustino is financially backed by Argentinian businessmen and has a team of five Grandmasters coaching him. The president of the Argentinian Chess Federation, Mario Petrucci, describes Faustino’s achievement as a ‘revolution’ in the world of chess.

Oro’s recent success at the Barcelona IM tournament, where he finished unbeaten and in shared first place, has garnered widespread attention and celebration in Argentina. With TV tickers running and newspaper supplements being dedicated to his achievement, Faustino’s talent has captured the hearts of chess fans across the nation.

Reflecting on Faustino’s exceptional abilities, Petrucci expresses awe and admiration, suggesting that the young prodigy may be a reincarnation with innate knowledge of the game. As Faustino continues to defy expectations and make history in the world of chess, his future in the game looks incredibly promising.
