Recap of Superbet Chess Classic Romania Round 2: Firouzja Bounces Back, Caruana Falters

After a disappointing start in the opening round, GM Alireza Firouzja bounced back with a victory against GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the Superbet Chess Classic Romania. Meanwhile, GM Fabiano Caruana had to settle for a draw against GM Wesley So after missing out on a winning position.

The second round of the tournament saw some intense battles on the chessboard, with GM Ian Nepomniachtchi drawing against Gukesh Dommaraju, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu drawing against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Bogdan-Daniel Deac drawing against Anish Giri.

The games were not the only source of excitement in Romania, as the country’s football team had just secured a spot in the round of 16 at Euro 2024. The celebrations spilled onto the streets of Bucharest, creating a festive atmosphere that could be heard from the players’ hotel.

The next round promises more thrilling matchups, with Firouzja looking to continue his winning streak and Caruana aiming to bounce back from his missed opportunity. The tournament, part of the Grand Chess Tour, features a $350,000 prize fund and runs until July 5.
