6 Exciting Activities to Enjoy on Treasure Coast During Spring Break 2025

Spring break 2025 is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for things to do on the Treasure Coast, look no further. From watching the Mets train at Clover Park to channeling your inner creativity at the Vero Beach Art & Craft Expo, there is much to do this spring.

But while the excitement of spring break activities is in full swing, the city of Fort Pierce has been embroiled in a contentious debate over the salary of its new city manager, Richard Chess. Chess, who currently serves as the Broward County assistant general manager of transportation and finance, initially asked for a salary of $235,000. However, some city commissioners drew a line at $200,000.

After much back and forth, Chess ultimately agreed to accept the $200,000 salary, which is $15,000 less than what he currently makes in Broward County. The contract was approved by the City Commission in a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Michael Broderick being the lone dissenting vote.

The contract includes a provision for a 5% pay increase after six months if Chess’s performance is deemed “satisfactory.” City Attorney Sara Hedges clarified that satisfactory performance would mean the commission wanting him to continue as city manager. Additionally, Chess can be fired without cause at any time, with a severance package provided if he is let go early.

Two major changes were made to the contract prior to approval. Firstly, Chess will no longer automatically be the director of the Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency board, a role that former City Manager Nick Mimms held. Secondly, Chess’s relocation stipend was increased to a maximum of $10,000.

As Chess prepares to take on his new role as city manager on April 2, the residents of Fort Pierce will be watching closely to see how he navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. And for those looking for a break from the city’s political drama, the Treasure Coast offers a plethora of activities to enjoy this spring break.
