Aronian Claims Commanding Victory, Niemann Overpowers Caruana in Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Semifinals

Las Vegas, NV – The stakes were high on the third day of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, as Levon Aronian and Hans Niemann emerged victorious in their respective semifinal matches, securing their spots in the final showdown set for Sunday. Both players will vie for the coveted title and a grand prize of $200,000.

In a gripping match against Fabiano Caruana, Niemann showcased his resilience and tactical prowess. The contest spanned four games, with the first two ending in draws under classical time controls. The tension escalated during the rapid tiebreaks, where Niemann found himself in a precarious position but managed to hold on. In the decisive rapid game, he seized the initiative and executed a brilliant attack, ultimately winning the match 2½–1½.

Niemann’s tactical brilliance was on full display as he maneuvered his pieces with precision. Already a pawn up, he launched a decisive assault that left Caruana’s defenses crumbling. The game concluded with a stunning sequence, showcasing Niemann’s ability to capitalize on his opponent’s weaknesses:

With this victory, Niemann remains undefeated in knockout play throughout the tournament, setting the stage for an exhilarating final.

Meanwhile, Levon Aronian took a more straightforward path to the finals, decisively defeating Arjun Erigaisi with a 2–0 victory in classical games, eliminating the need for tiebreaks. This win follows impressive performances against top-ranked players Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura earlier in the tournament, solidifying Aronian’s status as a formidable contender.

As the tournament progresses into its final weekend, the excitement continues to build. In the lower bracket, four matches determined who would compete for third place. Magnus Carlsen triumphed over Javokhir Sindarov, while Hikaru Nakamura dispatched Leinier Dominguez with a clean 2–0 sweep. Wesley So and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu also advanced, setting the stage for a thrilling lower bracket semifinal on Saturday.

With only eight players remaining, the anticipation for the Grand Final between Niemann and Aronian is palpable. This historic matchup will not only crown the first champion of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam on American soil but also mark a significant moment in the world of chess.

Stay tuned as the tournament reaches its climax, promising to deliver high-stakes drama and exceptional skill on the chessboard.
