In a surprising turn of events at the National chess championship, Aronyak Ghosh managed to close the gap between himself and the tournament leader, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, with a crucial win against Arjun Adireddy. Ghosh’s victory has made the closing stage of the championship much more interesting, as he now trails Ganguly by just half a point.

The ninth-seeded Ghosh, who is currently in sole second position with 7.5 points, faced off against his younger rival in a tense match that lasted 63 moves. Utilizing the Slav Defence strategy, Ghosh was able to outmaneuver Adireddy and secure a win with his pawn poised for promotion.

Meanwhile, on the first board, top seed S.P. Sethuraman opted for an Italian Game against Ganguly. The two Grandmasters engaged in a strategic battle, with both players finding accurate moves throughout the match. Ultimately, they agreed to a draw on the 31st move, maintaining Ganguly’s lead in the tournament.

In other important results from the ninth round, Diptayan Ghosh drew with Ajay Karthikeyan, M.R. Lalith Babu drew with Karthik Venkataraman, and Sriram Jha drew with Himal Gusain. Notable victories included Mitrabha Guha defeating G. Akaash and P. Shyaam Nikhil besting B. Vignesh.
