Grandmaster Koneru Humpy Meets PM Modi After FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship Win

Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, fresh off her victory in the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship, had the opportunity of a lifetime as she met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with her family. Humpy, who emerged victorious in the prestigious tournament in New York by defeating Irene Sukandar of Indonesia, described the experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime privilege.”

The meeting with the Prime Minister was a moment filled with inspiration and encouragement for Humpy, who took to Twitter to express her gratitude, calling it an “incredible honor.” This victory marks Humpy’s second win in the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship, making her only the second player after China’s Ju Wenjun to achieve this feat more than once.

Humpy’s triumph adds to a sensational year for Indian chess, following D Gukesh’s victory over China’s Ding Liren in the classical format World Championship. In addition, India secured its first-ever gold medals in the Open and Women’s categories at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest earlier in the year.

Despite starting the tournament in New York with a first-round defeat, Humpy’s resilience and skill shone through as she emerged as the lone winner in the final round, securing the top spot with 8.5 points. Her victory was a testament to her talent and determination, solidifying her position as India’s No. 1 chess player.

The chess fraternity in India continues to make strides on the global stage, with Humpy’s recent success adding to the country’s growing list of achievements in the sport. The meeting with Prime Minister Modi served as a fitting tribute to Humpy’s hard work and dedication, highlighting her as a role model for aspiring chess players across the nation.
