Rising Star: Liberty Sibanyoni’s Chess Journey at Greenside High School

Greenside, South Africa – What began as a simple curiosity has blossomed into a fervent passion for Liberty Sibanyoni, a 17-year-old Grade 12 learner at Greenside High School. In just two years, Liberty has transformed from a novice to the second-ranked player on his school’s chess team, showcasing remarkable dedication and skill.

Liberty’s chess journey started in Grade 9 when he sought to understand the intricate movements of the pieces. Armed with nothing but his curiosity, he turned to online videos to teach himself the game. “I was curious about the game and started watching videos to learn how everything worked,” Liberty shared.

As his interest deepened, so did his commitment. Liberty began playing regularly, analyzing his lost games, and studying various openings. His hard work paid off as he steadily climbed the ranks, ultimately earning a spot on the Greenside High chess team. Today, he proudly represents his school in local chess leagues, competing against formidable opponents, including Roosevelt High.

One of Liberty’s standout moments came when he defeated a teacher in a game, a victory he fondly recalls. “That was definitely one of my favourite games,” he said with a smile.

With several tournaments on the horizon, including the Alexforbes, Helpmekaar, and Moja tournaments, Liberty is focused on honing his skills further. Despite the rigorous demands of Grade 12, he believes chess has equipped him with valuable life skills. “Chess teaches patience and strategic thinking, which also helps with my schoolwork,” he explained.

Looking to the future, Liberty has ambitious goals. He aims to win more school tournaments and dreams of achieving higher titles in chess, aspiring to become a FIDE Master or International Master.

As Liberty continues to make strides in the chess world, his journey serves as an inspiring reminder of how curiosity can lead to passion and success.
