Gukesh and Tan Secure Victories in 2024 FIDE Candidates Events

India’s GM Gukesh D. made history as the youngest challenger in the 2024 FIDE Candidates events, while China’s GM Tan Zhongyi will seek to reclaim her title from GM Ju Wenjun. The last-round games in Toronto on Sunday saw intense battles as the challengers were determined in regulation, with no need for a playoff match.

In the Open section, GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Fabiano Caruana needed to win their games to have a chance at first place. Nakamura faced Gukesh, but it was Gukesh who surprised everyone with his preparation and nerves of steel, leading Nakamura into a position with no winning chances. Meanwhile, Caruana faced GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, who initially had the upper hand but made some impatient moves, allowing Caruana to seize the initiative. The game ended in a tense draw after a marathon battle.

In the Women’s section, Tan Zhongyi secured her spot as the challenger by drawing her game, while Lei Tingjie’s stunning novelty in her game was not enough to catch up. GM Humpy Koneru’s win propelled her into a tie for second place with Vaishali Rameshbabu.

Overall, Gukesh emerged as the winner in the Open section, earning a significant prize, while Tan Zhongyi claimed victory in the Women’s section. The tournament showcased intense battles, surprising moves, and impressive performances from the players.
