Judit Polgar Predicts D Gukesh May Lose World Chess Championship Title in 2026

In a bold prediction that has sent ripples through the chess community, legendary player Judit Polgar has expressed doubts about India’s D Gukesh retaining his World Chess Championship title in 2026. The 19-year-old prodigy, who made headlines by becoming the youngest world champion at just 18, has faced a challenging period since his historic victory over Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren in December 2024.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Polgar, the only woman to ever be ranked in the world’s top 10, analyzed Gukesh’s current form and the psychological hurdles he faces as he prepares to defend his title later this year. Despite his remarkable talent, Gukesh has struggled to secure major titles since his championship win, culminating in a disappointing performance at the Prague Chess Masters 2026, where he managed only one victory.

“The question mark over whether Gukesh can stay the world champion is very big,” Polgar stated. “I’m sure he has a great future, but I’m not sure he’ll hold onto the title after the next championship match. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t regain it in the future.”

The upcoming FIDE Candidates Tournament in April 2026 will determine Gukesh’s challenger, and Polgar believes that whoever emerges victorious will likely claim the world title.

Reflecting on Gukesh’s recent struggles, Polgar noted a shift in his playing style. “He seems to be taking fewer risks compared to when he first became champion,” she observed. “In the championship match, Gukesh displayed remarkable mental strength, which appears to be lacking now.”

Polgar elaborated on Gukesh’s mental fortitude during his championship run, emphasizing the importance of psychological resilience in high-stakes matches. “He was able to handle pressure and bounce back from mistakes, much like a jaguar hunting its prey,” she explained. “This mental strength was crucial in his victory over Ding Liren.”

To reclaim his edge, Polgar suggests that Gukesh focus not only on his chess skills but also on enhancing his mental conditioning. “He needs to embrace risks and not fear making mistakes,” she advised. “This psychological preparation is just as important as his technical training.”

As the chess world eagerly anticipates the upcoming championship match, all eyes will be on D Gukesh to see if he can rise to the occasion and prove Polgar’s doubts wrong.
