India Delivers Outstanding Performance at FIDE Chess Olympiad, Secures Gold Medals in Men’s and Women’s Events
India made history at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, by clinching gold medals in both the men’s and women’s events on Sunday. The men’s team, led by D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, secured India’s maiden gold medal in the Olympiad with a stellar performance in the final round.
In a thrilling match against Slovenia, India’s men’s team, which also included R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, emerged victorious with a 3.5-0.5 scoreline. Crucial wins from Gukesh and Erigaisi, followed by Praggnanandhaa’s victory and a draw from Vidit, sealed the gold for India.
In a post-match interview with Chess24, Gukesh expressed his determination to win the team gold for India after narrowly missing out on the title in the previous Olympiad. The young Grandmaster also shared his plans for the upcoming World Championship, where he will face China’s Ding Liren.
In a lighter moment during the interview, Gukesh revealed that while some Indian players chose to attend the legendary Bermuda party, others opted to skip it. The Bermuda party, a popular social event at the Chess Olympiad, is known for bringing players together in a relaxed and informal setting.
Gukesh disclosed that he, Praggnanandhaa, and Harikrishna decided not to attend the party, while Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi enjoyed the festivities. The Grandmaster emphasized the importance of personal preferences in balancing social activities with performance on the chessboard.
India’s outstanding performance at the FIDE Chess Olympiad has not only brought glory to the nation but also highlighted the team’s unity and determination to succeed on the international stage. Congratulations to Team India on their historic achievement!
