The 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship has kicked off at the Equarius Hotel in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, with reigning champion Ding Liren of China facing off against India’s chess prodigy, Gukesh.
In a highly anticipated showdown, 18-year-old Grandmaster Gukesh aims to make history by becoming the youngest world chess champion, challenging the defending champion Ding Liren, who is the first Chinese player to hold the title. The only Indian to win the championship so far is Viswanathan Anand.
The championship, running from November 25 to December 13, will feature up to 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points securing the title. If the match is tied after all games, tiebreakers including rapid and blitz games will determine the winner.
This year’s championship is significant as it marks the first time two Asian players are competing for the title, highlighting the growing prominence of chess in Asia. The event will be live-streamed on FIDE’s YouTube and Twitch channels and Chess.com’s social media platforms.
Google Doodle celebrated the championship’s opening with a special animated doodle, emphasizing the global appeal and strategic brilliance of chess.
