Erling Haaland Invests in Norway Chess’ Groundbreaking Total Chess World Championship Tour
Erling Haaland Joins Forces with Norway Chess to Launch Total Chess World Championship Tour
Oslo, Norway – In a groundbreaking move for the world of chess, football superstar Erling Haaland has become a strategic investor in Norway Chess, marking a significant milestone with the launch of the Total Chess World Championship Tour (TCWCT). This ambitious initiative has received the green light from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a minimum of 16 years, promising to elevate the game to new heights.
Haaland, the Manchester City striker, has teamed up with Norwegian business leader Morten Borge to establish Chess Mates, a company that will play a pivotal role in the ownership of Norway Chess. The partnership aims to merge the worlds of sports and strategy, showcasing the intellectual rigor of chess alongside the excitement of football.
“Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football,” Haaland stated in a media release. “You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything.”
The TCWCT will feature four tournaments annually, hosted in different cities, culminating in the crowning of a combined world champion across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. A pilot tournament is slated for autumn 2026, with a full championship season set to kick off in 2027. Each season will consist of four events, boasting a minimum annual prize pool of USD 2.7 million.
Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess, expressed enthusiasm about the tour’s potential. “We expect the new championship to become one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar. The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor speaks volumes about the commercial potential of this tour.”
Haaland’s involvement is expected to attract a broader audience to chess, transforming it into a spectacle for fans worldwide. As the sport continues to evolve, the TCWCT aims to bridge the gap between traditional chess enthusiasts and new spectators, making it a thrilling experience for all.
With Haaland’s star power and the innovative vision behind the TCWCT, the future of chess looks brighter than ever.
