Judit Polgar Questions Gukesh’s Future as World Chess Champion Ahead of Title Defense
Chess Legend Judit Polgar Questions Gukesh’s Title Defense Ahead of World Championship
Mumbai, March 12, 2026 — As the chess world eagerly anticipates the upcoming World Chess Championship, legendary player Judit Polgar has cast doubt on whether 19-year-old D. Gukesh can successfully defend his title. In a candid interview with The Indian Express, Polgar expressed her concerns about the young champion’s ability to maintain his status as the world’s best.
“There is a very, very big question mark whether Gukesh can stay the world champion after the next championship match,” Polgar stated. While she acknowledged Gukesh’s immense potential, she emphasized that the pressures of being a reigning champion could weigh heavily on him.
Gukesh made history in late 2024 by becoming the youngest world champion at just 18, defeating Ding Liren amid a backdrop of psychological struggles faced by his opponent. Polgar noted that Gukesh’s victory was not solely due to superior chess skills but rather his remarkable mental fortitude. “He was ready to make mistakes but bounce back from them,” she explained, likening his resilience to a jaguar hunting in the wild.
However, since claiming the title, Gukesh has struggled to replicate his success on the tournament circuit. He has yet to secure a victory in any major event, with his closest attempt being a near-win at the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee last year. His recent performance at the Prague Masters, where he ended with just one win, has further fueled concerns about his current form.
Polgar pointed out that the transition from challenger to champion brings a unique set of challenges. “When you’re a challenger, you’re the underdog. But now, the world is watching him as the champion, and there are suddenly expectations,” she said. Gukesh himself has acknowledged the pressure, admitting that he has much to learn and improve upon.
To regain his footing, Polgar believes Gukesh must focus not only on his chess skills but also on his psychological preparation. “He has to not be afraid of making mistakes and play it out,” she advised.
As the chess community holds its breath for the upcoming championship, all eyes will be on Gukesh to see if he can rise to the occasion and prove his doubters wrong.
