Aarav Dengla Becomes India’s 93rd Grandmaster at Just 16

Mumbai, March 8, 2026 — In a remarkable achievement that has captured the attention of chess enthusiasts across the nation, 16-year-old Aarav Dengla has officially become India’s 93rd Grandmaster. The young prodigy clinched this prestigious title by winning the GM Mix Bijeljina tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning chess career.

Aarav’s journey to the Grandmaster title has been nothing short of inspiring. He first earned his GM norm at a tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2022, followed by a second norm in Croatia last year. His passion for chess ignited at the tender age of five, and it wasn’t long before his exceptional talent caught the eye of Pravin Thipsay, India’s third Grandmaster. Under Thipsay’s mentorship, Aarav began competing in tournaments and quickly made a name for himself.

“Even as he trained under Thipsay, he began playing tournaments and winning them,” said Aarav’s mother, Shipra Dengla, in an interview with The Hindu. Her pride in her son’s accomplishments is palpable, as she reflects on the dedication and hard work that have brought them to this moment.

Recognizing the need for advanced training, Aarav’s family frequently traveled to Chennai to work with GM Vishnu Prasanna, a renowned coach known for his holistic approach to chess. “Working with Vishnu was a turning point in understanding both chess and life,” Shipra remarked. “He is an alchemist who can bring a lot of difference in multiple areas, not just the technical parts of chess.”

At Vishnu’s chess school, Aarav had the opportunity to interact with fellow chess stars like World Champion D. Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, forming bonds that enriched his experience and growth in the game.

Beyond his chess prowess, Aarav is also excelling academically, inspired by his father, Manoj Dengla, a CA rank holder and Harvard Business School alumnus. Shipra emphasizes the importance of balancing education with sports, a philosophy that has guided their family’s approach to Aarav’s development.

“I clearly remember there were multiple players who were extremely talented but somewhere people lost intensity. I just wish that more people are able to take the chance, give more time to their children, without judgment, and be there for them,” she concluded, reflecting on the challenges young athletes face.

As Aarav Dengla steps into the spotlight as India’s newest Grandmaster, his journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring chess players across the country. With his talent, dedication, and support system, the future looks bright for this young chess sensation.
