FM Banh Gia Huy Secures Spot at 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad for Team Vietnam

In an impressive display of skill and determination, FM Banh Gia Huy has clinched his spot at the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad for Team Vietnam after emerging victorious in the country’s national championship held in March. Huy’s stellar performance not only secured his place in the prestigious event but also saw him cross the 2400 FIDE rating threshold, bringing him one step closer to attaining the coveted IM title.

The Vietnam Championship, which took place in Hanoi, attracted 56 of the nation’s top players, including three GMs and four IMs. Despite facing tough competition, Huy stood out from the rest, finishing =1st with an impressive score of 7.5/9. His stellar performance allowed him to edge out GMs Nguyen Duc Hoa and Tran Tuan Minh on tiebreaks, solidifying his position as a rising star in the Vietnamese chess scene.

Huy’s journey to success has been marked by dedication and hard work, with the 15-year-old focusing primarily on classical chess. His remarkable performance at the national championship showcased his attacking prowess, particularly in a thrilling 26-move victory over Nguyen Tung Quan in the final round, where he executed a brilliant sacrifice with 25.Rxg7+!!

Despite hailing from a country that is often underrated in the chess world, Huy’s rise to prominence has been nothing short of remarkable. With over 250 FIDE-rated games under his belt in the last four years, Huy has demonstrated resilience and a deep passion for the game. In addition to his tournament success, Huy has also authored two acclaimed Chessable courses, showcasing his strategic acumen and analytical skills.
