India to Lead in Yoga and Chess at Second UN Games in 2025

India is set to play a leading role in the upcoming second United Nations Games, which will be held in April-May 2025. As the co-organizer of the event, India will showcase its expertise in sports like yoga and chess. The Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, expressed his excitement about India’s involvement in the games, emphasizing the importance of unity and international cooperation.

Yoga will take center stage on April 9 at the Rose Garden on the North Lawn of the UN Headquarters, while chess will also be featured on the same day at the Olympic Corner. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his passion for yoga, led a historic yoga session at the UN Headquarters in 2023. Harish highlighted the significance of sports in bringing people together, regardless of their backgrounds or affiliations.

India’s rich history in chess was also acknowledged, with Harish praising the young players who have been making waves in the global chess scene. Last year, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest world chess champion at the age of 18. Harish expressed confidence that the spirit of friendship and harmony will be reflected in the games, contributing to international peace and cooperation.

The United Nations Games are based on a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in September 2024, promoting peace and unity through sports. The event aims to continue promoting harmony, diplomacy, and cooperation through various sports activities. The opening ceremony of the UN Games 2025 was a grand affair, with a lineup of sports including football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and more. Turkmenistan is leading the organizing committee for the United Nations Games, ensuring a successful and inclusive event for all participants.
