India Dominates Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Eyes Double Gold
In a stunning display of dominance, the Indian chess teams have taken the Chess Olympiad in Budapest by storm, with both the men and women leading the competition at the halfway mark.
With India as the top seed in the competition featuring 180 nations, the Indian women have lived up to expectations by securing the sole lead position. The Indian men, seeded second in the open section, have also exceeded expectations and are currently in the sole lead.
Having won every match so far, India is the only team in either section to maintain a perfect record. The standout performances of players like Arjun Erigaisi, D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, and Divya Deshmukh have been instrumental in India’s success.
Arjun Erigaisi, the World No.4, has been particularly impressive, winning all six of his games. Divya Deshmukh has also been exceptional on the women’s third board, winning five games and drawing one.
As the tournament progresses, India is well positioned to secure a double gold and potentially improve upon the bronze medals it won in both sections in the previous edition of the Olympiad.
The upcoming matches against China will be crucial for both the Indian men and women, with a potential top-board clash between Gukesh and Ding Liren, who will face off in the World Championship match starting later this month.
With five rounds remaining, all eyes will be on the Indian teams as they aim to maintain their lead and secure victory in Budapest.
