India’s Bid for Hosting 2036 Olympics: Push for Inclusion of Indigenous Sports

India Pushes for Hosting 2036 Olympics, Plans to Include Indigenous Sports

In a groundbreaking move ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, India’s sports administrators are gearing up to push for the country’s chances of hosting the 2036 Games. The Sports Authority of India’s Mission Olympics Cell (MOC) has presented a detailed report to the new sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, outlining the measures needed to secure a successful bid.

According to a report by Press Trust of India (PTI), the MOC has identified six disciplines, including yoga, kho kho, kabaddi, chess, T20 cricket, and squash, that will be advocated for inclusion in the 2036 Olympics if India wins the hosting rights.

“We are way ahead in preparing for the Olympic bid, which will take place after Paris. But we will have to do a lot of lobbying with the IOC during the Paris Games, and we are completely prepared,” a senior member of the MOC stated.

If India secures the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, their chosen indigenous games will be introduced as demonstration events in the 2032 Brisbane Games as a precursor to the main event in 2036. This effort is expected to not only showcase India’s traditional sports but also improve the country’s medals tally.

The MOC has also been tasked with identifying new sporting disciplines that a host nation can pitch for, controlling doping, ensuring accountability in national federations, and attracting private investments in sports.

“We have already submitted our report to the ministry, which will take it up with the PMO in due course of time. But these indigenous sports will have to be introduced as demonstration events in the 2032 Olympics,” the MOC member explained.

With a focus on promoting indigenous sports and enhancing India’s medal chances, the sports administrators are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to bring the Olympics to the country in 2036.
