World Chess Champion Gukesh D Returns to India After Historic Win

World Chess Champion Gukesh D returned to India on Monday, basking in the glory of his historic win at the 2024 FIDE World Championship in Singapore. At just 18 years old, Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, surpassing the legendary Garry Kasparov’s record.

As he landed at the airport, officials from the Tamil Nadu government and the national federation were there to welcome him with open arms. Gukesh expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him on his journey to victory, saying, “Thank you for all the support. It means a lot to bring back the trophy. Thank you for the reception. I hope we can have a great time celebrating together in the next few days.”

The young chess prodigy also acknowledged the energy and enthusiasm that his supporters brought to his game, stating, “It’s amazing. Your support gave me a lot of energy. It’s a great feeling to win the world championship.”

Gukesh’s triumph over China’s Ding Liren in a nail-biting match that ended 7.5-6.5 solidified his place in chess history. The final game of the championship saw Gukesh showcasing his skills and composure, ultimately clinching the title and etching his name in the annals of chess greatness.

Reflecting on his defeat, Ding Liren graciously accepted the outcome, saying, “I have no regrets. It is a fair result to lose in the end. I will continue to play and strive for excellence.”

Gukesh’s mentor, Viswanathan Anand, played a crucial role in shaping the young champion at his academy, further highlighting India’s prowess in the world of chess. With his remarkable achievement, Gukesh has not only made his country proud but has also inspired a new generation of chess enthusiasts.

As the celebrations continue in India to honor Gukesh’s historic win, the chess world eagerly awaits to see what the young champion will accomplish next. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
