India Shines at FIDE Chess Olympiad, Clinches Gold Medals in Men’s and Women’s Events
Budapest, Hungary – India showcased a remarkable performance at the ongoing International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad in Budapest, securing two gold medals in both the men’s and women’s events on Sunday. In a thrilling final round, India’s men’s team consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna outshined Slovenia to claim the gold medal.
The victories from D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi propelled India to a 2-0 lead, ultimately confirming the gold medal. Praggnandhaa also emerged victorious in his game, while Vidit ended her match with a draw. The Indian team defeated Slovenia with a score of 3.5-0.5, sealing their triumph.
On the other hand, the Indian women’s chess team comprising Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev also clinched the gold medal by defeating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal secured wins in their respective matches, while R Vaishali settled for a draw.
The Indian women’s team improved upon their bronze medal from the Chennai Olympiad in 2022, marking a significant achievement for Indian chess. With these victories, India continues to make its mark on the international chess scene, showcasing exceptional talent and skill.
