Aleksandar Indjic Dominates to Win 2024 European Chess Championship

Four-time Serbian National Champion GM Aleksandar Indjic emerged victorious at the 2024 European Chess Championship, showcasing his dominance with a score of 9/11 and a performance rating of 2820. The undefeated champion led the tournament from round six onwards, securing five consecutive wins at one point. Indjic’s stellar performance earned him €20,000 in prize money, along with the prestigious title of European Chess Champion.

The tournament, held at the Hotel Palas in Petrovac, Montenegro, featured a total of 388 players, including 305 titled players and 119 grandmasters. Indjic’s triumph was particularly impressive given the strong field of competitors, which included top-rated players like Vladimir Fedoseev, Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Jorden van Foreest, and David Navara.

Indjic’s path to victory was not without challenges, as he started off as part of the pack until round five. However, a crucial win over Maksim Chigaev in round six propelled him to the top of the standings, a position he maintained until the end. Notable victories against Fedoseev and Ivan Cheparinov further solidified his lead in the tournament.

In the final round, Indjic faced off against GM Daniel Dardha, who finished in second place with 8.5/11. Despite the high stakes, the game ended in a draw, securing Indjic’s title as the European Chess Champion.

Aside from the top finishers, several players delivered outstanding performances, including Dana Kochavi and Teodora Injac, who excelled in their respective categories. The tournament also saw impressive rating gains by players like Yigit Karaca, highlighting the competitive nature of the event.
