In a surprising turn of events, inmates at Dubai Police’s Punitive and Correctional Establishments emerged as champions at the 4th Intercontinental Chess Cup for Prisoners. The team defeated 116 other teams from 51 countries in the online event overseen by the International Chess Federation.

Six players from Dubai participated in the tournament after being selected from a pool of 250 inmates who had previously competed in a local competition organized in collaboration with the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. In the final round, the Dubai Police team triumphed over the male inmate team from El Salvador’s Punitive and Correctional Establishments.

One of the inmates, B.B., described the final match as extremely challenging but expressed gratitude for the support provided by the authorities. Another inmate, A.A., shared that the tournament was a great experience and a personal milestone in recognizing his abilities in the game of chess.

Maj-Gen Marwan Julfar, director of Dubai Police General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments, congratulated the team and highlighted the importance of engaging inmates in sports tournaments, mental games, and educational programs. These activities not only improve physical health but also help intellectually and emotionally, filling their free time and increasing motivation through competitions.
