Chess Player Michael Brown Achieves 3rd GM Norm at Charlotte Chess Center Tournament

In a thrilling turn of events at the recent tournament held at the Charlotte Chess Center and Scholastic Academy, GM-elect Michael Brown achieved his elusive and coveted 3rd GM Norm. The highlight of the tournament was the dramatic GM Norm clinching-game against FM Gauri Shankar, which left spectators on the edge of their seats.

During an interview, Michael shared insights into how he managed to stay sharp despite his time constraints after enrolling in college. He credited his study partnerships with other strong players, such as IM Keaton Kiewra and IM Shiyam Thavandiran, for helping him maintain his competitive edge.

After graduating from BYU in December 2018, Michael discussed his next professional steps in the world of chess. He also reminisced about his memorable experience of beating world-class GM Yu Yangyi in 2016, a game he annotated in a highly instructive Youtube video.

Michael also shared some fun stories from playing at the Chess.com Isle of Man International tournament in 2017, where he had the opportunity to meet and compete against legendary players like GM Vishy Anand and GM Magnus Carlsen.
