Young Chess Prodigy Tamizh Amudhan Becomes World’s Top Under-9 Player

Tamil Nadu, India – At just 9 years old, Tamizh Amudhan has captured the attention of the global chess community by becoming the world’s top player in the Under-9 category. Not only has he achieved this remarkable feat, but he is also the youngest player to surpass a 2000 ELO rating, a milestone that speaks volumes about his extraordinary talent.

Tamizh’s chess journey began at the tender age of four, inspired by his cousins who introduced him to the game. His natural aptitude was quickly recognized by a local bus driver and part-time chess coach, Ravichandran, during a district-level tournament. Impressed by Tamizh’s ability to outplay seasoned opponents without formal training, Ravichandran decided to mentor him for free, setting the stage for Tamizh’s meteoric rise.

By the age of six, Tamizh had already made headlines by scoring a perfect 9 out of 9 points in the State Under-9 tournament, marking a significant breakthrough in his young career. His most notable achievement came last year when he clinched a silver medal at the prestigious ‘Athens of the East’ chess tournament, an accomplishment that earned him a car—a remarkable prize for any young athlete.

Behind Tamizh’s success lies the unwavering support and sacrifices of his family. His father, who works in a government position and hails from a modest agricultural background, has made significant sacrifices to ensure Tamizh receives the best training possible. To facilitate this, Tamizh’s mother has relocated 350 kilometers away to support his chess journey, while his father stays back to care for their 10-year-old daughter, Uthisha.

Despite their dedication, the financial burden of Tamizh’s chess career is substantial. Travel, lodging, entry fees, and coaching costs have become a challenge for the family. Tamizh’s father admits that had he known the financial implications of pursuing chess, they might have considered a different sport. However, with Tamizh now ranked as the top player, they are determined to continue supporting his journey. They are actively seeking sponsorship to help cover the costs, as financial constraints have already prevented them from participating in several national and international competitions.

As Tamizh Amudhan continues to rise in the chess world, his story serves as an inspiring reminder of the potential that lies within young talent, and the sacrifices families make to nurture that potential. The chess community eagerly awaits what this young prodigy will achieve next.
