Shocking Innovation: YouTuber Creates Taser Chess to Teach Players the Hard Way
In a world where learning often comes with its own set of challenges, one YouTuber has taken the concept of educational pain to a whole new level. Fletcher Heisler, known for his channel “Everything Is Hacked,” has designed a custom chess set that delivers a Taser-like shock whenever a player makes a mistake. The project, dubbed “Taser Chess,” aims to improve players’ skills through a rather unconventional method: physical discomfort.
Chess can be an intimidating game, especially for newcomers. The intricate rules and strategies can deter many from even attempting to learn. Heisler’s innovative approach seeks to change that by introducing a shocking twist to the traditional game. Inspired by other DIY projects that incorporate pain as a learning tool, Heisler’s chessboard utilizes a modified TENS unit—typically used for pain relief—to deliver jolts for incorrect moves.
The journey to create this electrifying chess set was not without its hurdles. Heisler faced numerous challenges, from wiring each of the 64 squares to ensuring that every chess piece conducted electricity properly. The complexity of the project grew exponentially with each step, requiring meticulous attention to detail and countless hours of trial and error.
The final product features four distinct modes: Illegal Mode, which shocks players for illegal moves; Blunder Mode, where the onboard Stockfish chess engine punishes poor decisions; Timed Mode, which zaps players for taking too long; and Puzzle Mode, offering over a million preloaded challenges with painful consequences for incorrect answers.
Despite the excitement surrounding Taser Chess, Heisler’s own chess skills did not improve as he had hoped. In fact, he found himself losing games to local chess hustlers, attributing his decline to the time spent tinkering with wires rather than honing his strategy. “I shocked myself so much building the board that I hardly noticed anymore,” he quipped, reflecting on the physical toll of his project.
The public debut of Taser Chess at a STEM convention was fraught with its own challenges, including a shattered chessboard that required last-minute repairs. However, Heisler’s determination paid off, and he successfully showcased his creation, leaving audiences both fascinated and horrified.
While Taser Chess may not have transformed Heisler into the next chess grandmaster, it certainly raises questions about the lengths to which people will go to learn and improve. As Heisler himself noted, “If anything, my chess game was getting worse because I spent all my time messing with wires.”
