Iranian Chess Player Sara Khadem Arrives in Spain After Competing Without Hijab
Iranian Chess Player Sara Khadem Faces Threats After Competing Without Hijab
Sara Khadem, a 25-year-old Iranian chess player, has found herself in hot water after competing in a tournament in Kazakhstan without wearing a hijab, which is mandatory in Iran. Khadem was pictured without the head covering, sparking controversy and threats against her and her family.
According to a source close to Khadem, she has received multiple phone calls warning her not to return home. Some callers have promised to “solve her problem” if she goes back, while others have issued threats to her family. In response to the threats, Khadem has landed in Spain, where she plans to relocate.
This incident is not isolated, as other sportspeople from Iran have also recently appeared without a hijab as a form of protest against the country’s hardline rulers. The gestures are seen as a response to the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly.
Tournament organisers in Kazakhstan reportedly arranged for four bodyguards to protect Khadem after her uncovered hair made headlines. Another Iranian player, Atousa Pourkashiyan, was also pictured without a hijab at the event.
The protests against Iran’s strict religious leaders have been ongoing since the end of last year, with hundreds reportedly killed by police and security services in an attempt to suppress dissent. The situation has escalated to the point where even prominent figures like retired football captain Ali Daei have faced repercussions for supporting the protesters.
As Khadem navigates the fallout from her decision to compete without a hijab, her story serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those who dare to challenge the status quo in Iran.
