Ding Liren admits Indian challenger D Gukesh may be favourite in world chess title showdown
In a surprising turn of events, defending world chess champion Ding Liren has declared his Indian challenger D Gukesh as the favorite to win their upcoming title showdown in November. Liren, who has been struggling with his form since last year, admitted that Gukesh has been playing exceptionally well and even has a higher rating than him.
The two chess prodigies are currently competing in the 45th Chess Olympiad, where the Indian team has been dominating with five consecutive victories. Gukesh, along with his teammates R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, and Arjun Erigaise, currently hold the top spot alongside Liren’s China and hosts Hungary.
Liren, who took a break from the game due to depression, returned earlier this year but has been facing challenges in regaining his top form. On the other hand, Gukesh, who won the Candidates tournament in April at the age of 17, has been making waves in the chess world.
The highly anticipated world championship match between Liren and Gukesh is set to take place in Singapore from November 20 to December 15, with a prize fund of USD 2.50 million at stake. If Gukesh emerges victorious, he will become the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand to claim the prestigious title.
Both players are focused on the ongoing Olympiad, where India and China are expected to be strong contenders for the gold medal. Gukesh remains tight-lipped about his plans for the world championship, while Liren acknowledges the tough competition from all participating teams.
As the chess world eagerly awaits the showdown between these two talented players, the stage is set for an exciting battle for the world title.
