Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School Chess Team Wins Division 1 State Championship for Third Consecutive Year
The Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School (KML) Chargers Chess Team made history once again by winning their third consecutive state championship, this time in Division 1 at the 2025 Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Championship. Despite being the eighth seed in the tournament, the Chargers proved their strength by defeating top teams such as University School Milwaukee and Wisconsin Lutheran.
Led by senior Carson Reik and sophomores Dylan Hanson, Sawyer Yogerst, and Kyle Sayovongsa, the Chargers dominated the competition with a score of 3.5 in four rounds. Their decision to move up to Division 1 after winning back-to-back titles in Division 2 paid off, as they showcased their skills and determination on the chessboard.
In addition to their impressive victory, the Chargers will now have the honor of taking care of the state chess traveling cup, a prestigious trophy that lists the names of winners dating back to 1970. The team’s success also extended to their Junior Varsity Chess Team, which finished in fifth place in the junior varsity tournament.
The KML Chargers Chess Team’s remarkable achievement has solidified their reputation as a powerhouse in Wisconsin high school chess. Their dedication, teamwork, and strategic prowess have set a high standard for future competitors, and their three-peat victory will be remembered as a defining moment in the history of the sport.
