The Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School (KML) Chargers Chess Team made history once again by winning their third consecutive state championship, this time in Division 1 at the 2025 Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Championship. Despite being the eighth seed in the tournament, the Chargers proved their strength by defeating top teams like University School Milwaukee and Wisconsin Lutheran.

Led by senior Carson Reik and sophomores Dylan Hanson, Sawyer Yogerst, and Kyle Sayovongsa, the Chargers dominated the competition with a score of 3.5 in four rounds. Their decision to move up to Division 1 after winning back-to-back titles in Division 2 shows their determination to challenge themselves and strive for excellence.

In addition to their impressive victory, the KML Chargers Junior Varsity Chess Team also had a strong showing, finishing in fifth place out of 12 teams in the junior varsity tournament. The future looks bright for the Chargers as they continue to showcase their talent and dedication to the game of chess.

With this latest triumph, the KML Chargers have solidified their place in state chess history and will proudly display the state chess traveling cup, which lists the names of winners dating back to 1970. Congratulations to the KML Chargers Chess Team on their remarkable achievement!
