Koneru Humpy Considers Withdrawing from FIDE Candidates Amid Middle East Conflict
Cyprus – Renowned Indian chess player Koneru Humpy is contemplating withdrawing from the upcoming FIDE Candidates tournament, citing safety concerns due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Scheduled to take place in Cyprus from March 28, the event has drawn attention not only for its competitive stakes but also for the precarious geopolitical climate surrounding it.
Humpy, a two-time World Rapid Chess Champion and one of three Indian participants in the eight-player tournament, expressed her apprehension in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times. “It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s dangerous to travel to anywhere near West Asia at this point when there’s so much tension and uncertainty,” she stated. With the conflict intensifying between Iran, Israel, and the United States, Humpy believes that the risks outweigh the benefits of participating in the prestigious event.
The ongoing turmoil has already disrupted travel in the region, notably with the closure of Dubai International Airport, affecting flights to and from the Gulf. Major sporting events have also been impacted, including the cancellation of Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Humpy Voices Concerns Over Player Safety
Humpy’s concerns are not unfounded. Cyprus was selected as the venue for the FIDE Candidates in November, well before the current hostilities erupted. The situation escalated dramatically when a British air base in Cyprus was targeted in a drone attack earlier this month, leading to a cascade of flight cancellations and raising alarms about safety in the region.
In her interview, Humpy criticized FIDE for not adequately considering the safety of players. “From an organizational point of view, it’s just not the right call. As someone who’s spent decades in chess, I thought I should speak up. Irrespective of whether you’re a champion or not, if you can’t speak up when the situation demands, it means you’ve learned nothing from sport,” she asserted.
After the drone attack, Humpy reached out to FIDE for clarification on safety measures. Their response, she said, was that they were “monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis,” a reply that did little to assuage her concerns.
The Stakes of the FIDE Candidates
The FIDE Candidates tournament is one of the most significant events in the chess calendar, featuring 16 of the top players from both men’s and women’s divisions. Humpy, widely regarded as India’s best player with strong chances of winning, is now faced with a difficult decision that weighs her passion for the game against her safety.
As the tournament date approaches, the chess community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of all participants. With Humpy’s potential withdrawal, the stakes of the FIDE Candidates have never been higher, not just in terms of competition, but also in the context of global safety and security.
As the situation unfolds, the chess world awaits FIDE’s next move.
