India’s top-ranked female chess player, Koneru Humpy, set to compete in Norway Chess Women 2025

India’s top-ranked female chess player, Koneru Humpy, is gearing up to make her mark in the prestigious Norway Chess Women 2025 tournament. Currently ranked World No.6 in women’s classical chess, Humpy’s return to Norway Chess Women highlights her remarkable career filled with significant milestones.

Humpy, who became the first Indian woman to achieve the Grandmaster title in 2002, has been a trailblazer in the world of chess. Her achievements include winning the World Rapid Championship title twice, in 2019 and 2024, and being named the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year in 2020.

With victories in the Olympiad, Asian Games, and Asian Championships, Humpy has solidified her status as one of the top female players in chess. Her participation in Norway Chess Women 2025 will give her the opportunity to once again showcase her skills on a global stage.

Describing herself as “self-disciplined,” Humpy’s approach to chess has been characterized by focus, consistency, and resilience. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring chess players, especially young women in India and around the world.

Norway Chess Women, part of the renowned Norway Chess tournament, features a unique 6-player double round-robin format and equal prize funds for men and women. Humpy’s participation in the event, scheduled from May 26 to June 6, is highly anticipated, with her proven track record making her a strong contender for the title.
