Live Indian Sports Update: Carlsen defeats Pragg in Norway Chess Armageddon; Sindhu competes at Indonesia Open

Carlsen beats Pragg in armageddon; Vaishali secure bonus point at Norway Chess

Welcome to ESPN India’s daily blog, where we bring you all the latest news from the world of Indian sports. In the ongoing Norway Chess 2024 tournament, India’s R Praggnanandhaa faced off against world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a thrilling armageddon match in Round 8.

Despite putting up a strong fight and securing a draw in the classical match, Praggnanandhaa ultimately fell to Carlsen’s prowess in the armageddon. The victory extended Carlsen’s lead at the top of the standings, with Hikaru Nakamura suffering defeat against Alireza Firouzja in a similar fashion.

On the women’s side, R Vaishali managed to secure a much-needed bonus point after defeating Anna Muzychuk in armageddon. With this win, Vaishali remains in contention in the tournament standings.

In other matches, world champion Ding Liren once again faced disappointment as he lost to Fabiano Caruana in the armageddon. Despite squandering winning positions, Caruana managed to come out on top in the decisive match.

With two rounds to go, Carlsen leads the tournament with 14.5 points, followed by Nakamura with 13.5 points and Praggnanandhaa with 12 points. The competition remains fierce as all three players are still in the running to win the championship.

In the women’s standings, China’s Ju Wenjun now leads the pack with 14.5 points, followed by Muzychuk with 13 points and Vaishali with 11.5 points. The competition is heating up as the tournament approaches its conclusion.
