Live Indian Sports Update: Pragg suffers defeat against Caruana in Norway Chess, Lakshya competes in Indonesia Open Quarterfinals

Norway Chess: Caruana beats Praggnanandhaa in armageddon

R Praggnanandhaa’s chances of winning the Norway Chess took a hit on Thursday as he lost to Fabiano Caruana in the armageddon after playing out a draw in the Round 9 classical match. Praggnanandhaa still has an outside chance for the title with one more round to go but it would depend on other results going his way.

In women’s section, R Vaishali suffered a loss in her classical match against China’s Lei Tingjie while Koneru Humpy also lost her match against another Chinese opponent Ju Wenjun in armageddon.

In other results, world champion Ding Liren beat Hikaru Nakamura in armageddon to take the extra point. The loss was good news for Magnus Carlsen as he increased his lead on top to 1.5 points, he went on beat Alireza Firouzja in armageddon in the penultimate round. Carlsen has 16 points followed by Nakamura who has 14.5 points and Praggnanandhaa is placed third with 13 points. Wenjun leads the women’s standings with 16 points followed by Tingjie and Anna Muzychuk who both have 14.5 points. Vaishali is fourth with 11.5 points to her name.

Wrestling: Aman wins silver in Budapest

Wrestler Aman Sehrawat won the silver medal at the Budapest Ranking series. Aman made it to the final after beating 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Aryan Tsiutryn of Belarus 14-4 but lost the final against Japan’s Rei Higuchi 1-11. Aman has already made it to the Olympics and the second-place finish in Budapest will help him in securing a favourable draw in Paris. The women’s competition will begin today with the likes of Vinesh Phogat (50kg) and Antim Panghal (53kg) in action.

Badminton: Lakshya Sen faces Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in the Indonesia Open quarterfinal. Shooting: Sift Kaur Samra and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar are in action in the 50m Rifle 3 Position Final at the ISSF World Cup in Munich. Wrestling: Aman Sehrawat’s final at the Budapest Ranking Series will happen later this evening.
