Chess on the Hill Hosts 2nd Annual March Youth Chess Madness Tournament at Bennington Free Library
The 2nd Annual March Youth Chess Madness Tournament hosted by Chess on the Hill at the Bennington Free Library was a smashing success, with a larger turnout than expected. The tournament, held scholastic-style, saw 38 young chess players showcasing their skills and strategic thinking.
The event’s growth and popularity can be attributed to the efforts of Chess on the Hill founder Trevor Plizga, who has been instrumental in establishing and running local youth chess clubs in various schools and libraries in the area. Plizga noted that this year’s tournament had twice as many participants as last year, with a higher level of play overall.
The tournament featured two sections – one for pre-K through 5th grade and another for sixth grade through eighth grade. In the middle school section, Cooper Aalberts took first place, followed by Sam Ellis in second place and Rownin Hasty in third place. Aalberts and Ellis had a tie for first place, which was broken by a rapid game to determine the champion.
In the elementary school section, Ira Varone claimed first place, Jonah Beck secured second place, and Isaac Greene-DeLanghe finished in third place. All three winners were from Williamstown Elementary.
Chess enthusiasts and young players in the Bennington area can continue to hone their skills at the Bennington Free Library, where youth chess programs are offered for grades pre-K through eight. The program is made possible by a grant written by children’s librarians Linda Donigan and Johnna Fredrickson. More information about youth chess programs at the library can be found on their website.
