2nd Annual March Youth Chess Madness Tournament Draws Larger Than Expected Turnout

The 2nd Annual March Youth Chess Madness Tournament hosted by Chess on the Hill at the Bennington Free Library was a smashing success, with a record turnout of 38 young chess players participating in the scholastic-style event.

The tournament, which is only in its second year, saw a significant increase in participants compared to the previous year. This growth can be attributed to the efforts of Chess on the Hill founder Trevor Plizga, who has been instrumental in expanding youth chess clubs in the Bennington area.

“This year, there were twice as many kids as last year’s tournament, and a much higher level of play,” said Plizga. “It’s been great to see this chess community grow over the last few years.”

The tournament was divided into two sections – one for pre-K through 5th grade and another for sixth grade through eighth grade. In the middle school section, Cooper Aalberts took first place, followed by Sam Ellis in second place and Rownin Hasty in third place. Aalberts and Ellis even had to play a rapid game to determine the champion after tying in the final round.

In the elementary school section, Ira Varone claimed first place, with Jonah Beck in second place and Isaac Greene-DeLanghe in third place, all representing Williamstown Elementary.

Chess at the Bennington Free Library is just one of the many opportunities for youth to engage in the game, thanks to a grant written by children’s librarians Linda Donigan and Johnna Fredrickson. More information on youth chess programs can be found on the Bennington Free Library website.

The success of the 2nd Annual March Youth Chess Madness Tournament highlights the growing interest and talent in youth chess in the Bennington area, setting the stage for even more exciting events in the future.
