Creation of LumbrasGigaBase Chess Database and How You Can Support
Chess enthusiasts rejoice as a new database has been created to provide access to over 13.2 million games, more than 590,000 players, 36,000 events, and 26,000 locations. The creator of this database embarked on this project after struggling to find updated and freely available PGN files or databases.
Utilizing Scid vs. PC/MAC, the creator merged several existing databases and PGN files to compile this extensive collection. Each source is tagged for easy searchability within the database. The database can be accessed on the website lumbrasgigabase.com.
To ensure the database’s quality, various measures were taken to compress the data and eliminate duplicates. Games with less than 10 half-moves were removed, player names and other details were corrected, and games with players below 1800 ELO were deleted. Additionally, ECO codes were added to all games, and duplicates were identified based on specific parameters.
The database is regularly updated on a weekly basis, usually on Tuesdays, following the release of the most recent TWIC file. Future updates will include database files in si5 and si4 formats, a differential PGN file with new games, and a monthly PGN file containing all new games.
Chess enthusiasts can support the creator by buying them a coffee to help maintain the website and continue providing access to this valuable database. With a passion for chess and dedication to maintaining this resource, the creator invites fellow enthusiasts to explore and benefit from this extensive collection of chess games.
