Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz 2024: All You Need To Know With Magnus Carlsen Leading the Line-Up
The Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz tournament is all set to kick off in Kolkata, with World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen leading the star-studded line-up. Carlsen, the Norwegian chess Grand Master, will be making his second appearance at the tournament after clinching victory in the inaugural edition back in 2019.
Scheduled to take place from November 13 to 17, 2024 at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Alipore, Kolkata, the tournament will also feature the Indian chess contingent, fresh off their stellar performance at the Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest, Hungary.
The tournament will consist of both Open and Women categories, with rapid and blitz formats and equal prize money for both. Chess legend Viswanathan Anand will continue his association with the event as the Ambassador.
In the Open category, players like Daniil Dubov, Wesley So, and local talents like Vidit Gujrathi and R. Praggnanandhaa will be vying for the top honors alongside Carlsen. The Women’s category will see strong contenders like Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno, and Koneru Humpy battling it out on the board.
The time control for the rapid games will be 25 minutes per game with a 10-second increment from move 1, while blitz games will have a time control of 3 minutes per game with a 2-second increment from move 1.
With an action-packed schedule spread over the five days, including rapid and blitz rounds, the tournament promises to be a thrilling chess extravaganza for fans and players alike.
