In a thrilling conclusion to the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour, Magnus Carlsen emerged victorious, beating tournament leader Grandmaster Wei Yi to win the Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz event and a prize of $40,000. The five-time World Champion and World No. 1 delivered a brilliant performance, securing ten blitz wins in a row to overtake his competitors and claim the top spot.

“I knew if I had a good day that I’d have a chance. I felt calmer today and knew that I’ve done this before. It was an incredible performance by Wei Yi, and I was fortunate to win again today. I’m grateful to everyone who supports me from near and far,” said Carlsen.

Wei Yi finished in second place, earning $30,000 for his efforts. The final standings of the Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz event showcased the top players from around the world, with Carlsen taking the lead followed by Wei Yi, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Kirill Shevchenko, Anish Giri, Vincent Keymer, and Gukesh Dommaraju.

The Grand Chess Tour, a prestigious circuit of international chess tournaments featuring the best players in the world, will continue next month in Bucharest, Romania for the Superbet Romania Classic. The tournament, sponsored by the Superbet Foundation, will offer a total prize fund of $350,000 and feature top players competing in a round-robin format.

Fans can catch all the action of the Grand Chess Tour on the Saint Louis Chess Club’s Twitch and YouTube channels, with expert commentary from GMs Yasser Seirawan, Evegeny Miroshnichenko, and Cristian Chirila, along with International Master Jovanka Houska.
