In a historic achievement for Indian chess, Mayank Chakraborty, a teenage prodigy from Assam, has officially become the country’s 94th Grandmaster and the first-ever from the Northeast region. This milestone was reached at the Young Talents tournament held in Sweden, where Mayank secured his third and final GM norm.
Competing at the Hotel Stockholm North, Mayank dominated the tournament, finishing with an impressive 6.5 points out of 8 after eight rounds, leading the standings by a full point. The decisive moment came in the eighth round when he triumphed over Philip Lindgren, clinching his final Grandmaster norm with a round to spare.
Hailing from Guwahati, Mayank has long been recognized as the highest-rated chess player from Northeast India. His achievement marks a significant moment not only for him but also for the entire region, inspiring hopes of a new generation of chess enthusiasts and players.
However, the official confirmation of Mayank’s Grandmaster title is contingent upon the participation of his last-round opponent, Willow Jonah B. If Jonah appears and makes the first move in the final round, scheduled for 1:30 PM IST, Mayank’s title will be validated.
The Grandmaster title, awarded by FIDE, is the pinnacle of chess achievement and one of the most prestigious honors in the sport. Mayank’s accomplishment has sparked celebrations across Assam and the Northeast, with many viewing it as a historic breakthrough for chess in the region.
Currently ranked 55th in India, Mayank’s journey is a testament to his dedication and talent, and his success is expected to pave the way for future chess players from Northeast India.
As the chess community eagerly awaits the final confirmation of his title, one thing is clear: Mayank Chakraborty has already made his mark in the annals of Indian chess history.
