In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian chess, 16-year-old Mayank Chakraborty from Assam has officially become the country’s 94th Grandmaster (GM) and the first from the Northeast region. This historic milestone was reached at the Young Talents tournament held in Sweden, where Mayank secured his third and final GM norm.

Competing at the Hotel Stockholm North, Mayank showcased his exceptional skills, finishing the tournament with an impressive score of 6.5 points out of 8, leading the standings by a full point. The decisive moment came in the eighth round when he triumphed over Swedish player Philip Lindgren, clinching his final GM norm with a round to spare.

Hailing from Guwahati, Mayank has long been recognized as the highest-rated chess player from Northeast India. His achievement is not just a personal victory but a proud moment for the entire region, inspiring young chess enthusiasts across Assam and beyond.

However, the official confirmation of Mayank’s GM title is contingent upon the participation of his last-round opponent, Willow Jonah B. If Jonah appears and makes the first move in the final round scheduled for 1:30 PM IST, Mayank’s title will be validated by FIDE, the international chess federation.

The Grandmaster title is the pinnacle of chess achievement, representing the highest level of skill and dedication in the sport. Mayank’s accomplishment has already ignited celebrations throughout Assam, with many viewing it as a historic breakthrough that could pave the way for future generations of chess players in the region.

Currently ranked 55th in India, Mayank’s journey to this prestigious title is a testament to his hard work and perseverance. As he prepares for the final round, the chess community eagerly awaits the confirmation of his status as India’s newest Grandmaster.

This remarkable achievement not only highlights Mayank’s talent but also shines a spotlight on the growing chess culture in Northeast India, promising a bright future for the sport in the region.
