Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs Issues Warning on Public Display of Foreign National Emblems in Relation to Israel-Hamas Conflict
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Singapore has issued a warning regarding the public display or wearing of foreign national emblems related to the Israel-Hamas war without a permit. This warning comes under the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act of 1949, which applies to all foreign national emblems, including flags and banners of any state.
Those found guilty of this offence could face imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to $500. Additionally, travellers wearing such apparel may be denied entry into Singapore.
MHA has observed the sale of apparel and paraphernalia with foreign national emblems related to the ongoing conflict being worn or displayed by the public. The ministry advised against such displays, citing the heightened sensitivities surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Furthermore, MHA emphasized that promoting or supporting terrorism through the display of apparel or paraphernalia carrying logos of terrorist or militant groups, such as Hamas or its military wing Al-Qassam Brigades, will not be tolerated.
In light of the conflict, the MHA suggested supporting humanitarian relief efforts through authorized fundraising activities and donation drives. Local charities like the Singapore Red Cross Society (SRC) and the Rahmatan Lil Alamin (Blessings to All) Foundation (RLAF) are accepting donations for communities affected by the Israel-Hamas conflict.
As of 1 November, RLAF had raised approximately $4.6 million for aid in Gaza, while SRC announced its intention to send US$ 200,000 worth of relief supplies to the war zone.
The government has also contributed $300,000 towards relief operations through SRC. The MHA emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in Singapore amidst external conflicts.
