MR Chess: A Mixed Reality Chess Experience Like No Other

The latest innovation in the world of virtual reality gaming has arrived with the release of MR Chess, a mixed reality chess game that brings the authentic feeling of playing chess in your living room with an opponent thousands of miles away. Designed by Fabian Rücker and supported by the German studio weltenbauer, MR Chess is a groundbreaking game that seamlessly blends physical and virtual reality.

Fabian’s vision for MR Chess was inspired by Meta’s futuristic metaverse and mixed reality concepts. The game is built from the ground up for mixed reality and hand tracking, allowing players to place and anchor a virtual chessboard on any surface and interact with it using their hands. The level of detail in the chessboard and pieces, combined with the realistic occlusion model for hand tracking, creates an immersive gaming experience unlike any other.

One of the standout features of MR Chess is the sense of co-presence it creates between players. When two players meet virtually in the game, their avatars appear on opposite sides of the chessboard, giving the feeling of being in the same room together. The UI design, projected onto the physical table in front of players, adds to the interactive and immersive nature of the game.

MR Chess is currently available in the App Lab for $15, offering players the opportunity to experience a new level of social gaming in mixed reality. With plans for fully virtual environments, chess puzzles, and an Elo rating system in the future, MR Chess is set to revolutionize the way we play chess in the digital age.
