“D Gukesh aims for first Freestyle Grand Slam Tour win against Alireza Firouzja in seventh-spot playoff”

D Gukesh, the reigning World Champion in Fischer Random chess, faced a tough defeat at the hands of Hikaru Nakamura in the ongoing Freestyle Grand Slam Tour at Weissenhaus in Wangels, Germany. Despite his best efforts, Gukesh struggled under time pressure and ultimately lost to Nakamura in the 5-8 classification playoff match.

Nakamura, who is currently ranked World No. 3, pointed out Gukesh’s weakness in managing time and highlighted issues with his intuition and calculations. The event has seen all participants discussing and analyzing games together, except for Gukesh, who prefers to analyze alone. Nakamura emphasized the disadvantage this poses for Gukesh, especially when facing strong opponents like Fabiano Caruana.

Looking to bounce back, Gukesh will now face off against Alireza Firouzja in the playoff for seventh position. Despite Firouzja’s previous victory over Gukesh during the round-robin stage, the Indian Grandmaster will be determined to secure his first win in the Freestyle Grand Slam Tour.
