Round eight of the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament and Women’s Candidates Tournament saw some exciting matchups and surprising results that shook up the standings. In the Candidates Tournament, GM Hikaru Nakamura defeated GM Fabiano Caruana in an all-American showdown, while GM Gukesh Dommaraju also secured a victory against his countryman GM Vidit Gujrathi. As a result, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi now shares the lead with Gukesh with five points after drawing against GM Nijat Abasov.

In the Women’s Candidates Tournament, GM Lei Tingjie pulled off a crucial win against the tournament leader, GM Tan Zhongyi, to join her and GM Aleksandra Goryachkina at the top of the standings with five points each.
