Awonder Liang Triumphs Over Hikaru Nakamura in Candidates Training Match

Saint Louis, MO – March 15, 2026 – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Awonder Liang defeated world number two Hikaru Nakamura 6-4 in the highly anticipated Candidates Training Match held at the Saint Louis Chess Club from March 13-15. The match served as a crucial warm-up for Nakamura ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, set to begin on March 29 in Cyprus.

The competition kicked off with two classical games, both of which ended in draws. Liang, playing with the black pieces, showcased his tactical prowess, while Nakamura aimed for sharp, complex positions to prepare for the high-stakes tournament ahead. “I want games that are sharp and complicated because in the Candidates my opponents are always going to be playing all-in,” Nakamura remarked.

The rapid section saw Liang take the lead, winning three out of four games. His victory in the first rapid game set the tone, as he outplayed Nakamura with ease. Although Nakamura managed to level the score in the second game, Liang’s strategic brilliance shone through in the subsequent matches, culminating in a decisive 3-1 win in the rapid format.

The blitz section concluded with a tie, as both players exchanged victories in a thrilling finale. Despite the loss, Nakamura remained optimistic, stating, “Overall, I thought my play was very sharp, very creative. Not unhappy with the result, but definitely not the way I would have liked the match to end.”

Liang’s victory is a significant milestone, marking his first win against Nakamura in a competitive setting. The 22-year-old rising star, who recently crossed the 2700 rating threshold for the first time, expressed his excitement about the match. “Playing against Hikaru was an incredible experience. I learned a lot and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Liang said.

As the chess world turns its attention to the Candidates Tournament, Nakamura’s performance in this training match raises questions about his readiness for the intense competition ahead. With the looming geopolitical tensions affecting some participants, including concerns from female players regarding safety, the atmosphere surrounding the tournament is charged with uncertainty.

Nakamura, however, remains focused on his goal of qualifying for a world championship match against reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju. “This match was good experience before we get into the big event,” he concluded, looking ahead to the challenges that await him in Cyprus.

As the chess community eagerly anticipates the Candidates Tournament, Liang’s victory serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving landscape of competitive chess, where new talents continually emerge to challenge the established elite.
