Georgian Chess Players Shine at 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary
Georgia Celebrates Success at 45th Chess Olympiad
Georgia recently celebrated the success of its chess players at the 45th Chess Olympiad held in Hungary. Nana Dzagnidze, who won the bronze medal on the individual first board, returned home along with other members of the Georgian Women’s and Boys Chess Teams, including legendary player Nona Gafrindashvili.
The Georgian women’s chess team finished in 6th place overall, while the Vaj chess team secured the 19th spot. The event, which concluded on September 23 in Budapest, saw India clinch gold in both the Open and Women’s sections, as well as the prestigious Gaprindashvili Cup for the best combined results.
The Olympiad also marked the 100th anniversary of the World Chess Federation – Fide, with a celebratory event honoring outstanding chess achievers and organizations. The Georgian women’s team was named the best of all time, and Nona Gafrindashvili received a special prize for her contributions to the sport.
Nana Dzagnidze, a Georgian grandmaster and top female player, has previously won team bronze medals in the Women’s World Team Championship. Upon their return, the Georgian chess players were greeted at Tbilisi International Airport by Aleksandre Maisuradze, the head of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, who congratulated them on their success.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia provided support for the Georgian chess players throughout the Olympiad, highlighting the country’s commitment to fostering talent and excellence in the sport. Fans and loved ones gathered at the airport to welcome the players back home, celebrating their achievements on the international stage.
