Interview with IM Manon Reja Neer: Bangladesh’s Rising Chess Star in 2024
IM Manon Reja Neer has been making waves in the Bangladeshi chess scene in 2024, with his impressive performances and achievements. The 15-year-old prodigy not only clinched the national chess championship but also became the youngest International Master in the country.
Currently in New York for the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, Neer sat down for an exclusive interview with The Daily Star’s Anisur Rahman to discuss his remarkable year, challenges, and future aspirations.
Reflecting on his stellar year, Neer expressed his delight at achieving the IM title and winning the National Chess Championship, calling it a dream come true. He highlighted the significant improvement in his rating points and the fulfillment of all three norms required for the IM title in 2024.
Despite playing in 18 FIDE-recognised tournaments at home and abroad, participating in nearly 200 matches, Neer expressed satisfaction with the opportunities he had to showcase his skills. He emphasized the importance of playing in a variety of tournaments to create opportunities and achieve his targets.
When asked about weaknesses in his gameplay, Neer acknowledged struggling with handling mental pressure in crucial moments, which led to missing out on two GM norms. However, he remained optimistic about his overall performance and ability to compete against top Grandmasters.
Looking ahead to 2025, Neer shared his goal of giving his best in every competition and not setting specific targets. He expressed his admiration for Indian GM Gukesh Dommaraju, who became world champion at a young age, and highlighted the need for similar support and sponsorships in Bangladesh to achieve such heights.
As he prepares for the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, Neer’s only expectation is to perform well and continue his impressive run in the international chess arena.
With his determination, talent, and passion for the game, IM Manon Reja Neer is undoubtedly a rising star in Bangladeshi chess, poised for even greater success in the future.
