Insight from GM Nepomniachtchi on Ding Liren, Gukesh, and the World Championship Match

In a recent podcast episode released on YouTube and Spotify, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi shared his insights on the upcoming world championship match between reigning champion GM Ding Liren and challenger GM Gukesh Dommaraju. Nepomniachtchi believes that if Ding can recover his 2019 form, he would be a “massive favorite” against Gukesh. On the other hand, GM Fabiano Caruana thinks that one good result can make a huge difference for Ding.

The match between Ding and Gukesh is scheduled for November 20 – December 15, with Gukesh earning the golden ticket to challenge the reigning champion. Despite missing his chance for a third title match, Nepomniachtchi remains uncertain about who he favors to win the match.

Ding has been under scrutiny from the chess world since winning the title, with concerns about his low activity level and poor results. He has admitted to struggling with illness and psychological issues since winning the match, leading to speculation about his future in the game.

Carlsen recently suggested that Ding may be “permanently broken” and never return to his peak level from 2019. However, Caruana believes that Ding is capable of playing at a strong level and just needs one decent result to boost his confidence.

While Nepomniachtchi finds it hard to bet on Gukesh, he praised the 17-year-old for his impressive control throughout the tournament. Gukesh is currently competing in the Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland event, while Ding will return to classical chess in Norway Chess starting on May 27.

The chess world eagerly awaits the outcome of the world championship match between Ding and Gukesh, with both players facing their own challenges and expectations in the lead-up to the event.
