NEW DELHI TO HOST FIDE CHESS WORLD CUP 2025: RETURN OF THE TOURNAMENT TO INDIAN SOIL
New Delhi is set to make a grand return to the world of chess as it gears up to host the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 from October 31 to November 27. This prestigious tournament will mark the first time in nearly 23 years that India will host the event, with the last one being held in Hyderabad in 2002 where Viswanathan Anand emerged victorious.
According to sources, New Delhi is the favored city to host the World Cup, with government approval expected soon. An official from the All India Chess Federation (AICF) mentioned that Delhi is always the first preference for hosting world tournaments, citing the city’s infrastructure and accessibility for players.
In addition to the Men’s World Cup, India will also host the Women’s World Cup separately in Batumi, Georgia from July 5 to July 19. The country will also be hosting the 5th leg of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix Series in Maharashtra from April 13 to 24.
However, while Delhi is set to host the World Cup, it seems that the city may lose the hosting rights for the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. Reports suggest that organizers are exploring alternative venues in Europe due to a lack of investor interest in Delhi.
Despite this setback, the chess world is abuzz with excitement as the FIDE World Cup returns to Indian soil, promising thrilling matches and intense competition. With top players from around the globe expected to participate, chess enthusiasts can look forward to an unforgettable event in the heart of New Delhi.
