Nigerian Chess Champion Tunde Onakoya Breaks Record with 60-Hour Marathon in Times Square

Nigerian chess champion and child education advocate Tunde Onakoya has made headlines around the world after breaking the record for the longest chess marathon. Playing for an incredible 60 hours nonstop in the heart of New York City’s Times Square, Onakoya’s feat has captured the attention and admiration of many.

The Guinness World Record organization has yet to confirm Onakoya’s attempt, but for Nigerians, the 29-year-old is already being hailed as a national hero. Onakoya’s goal was not only to break the record but also to raise $1 million for a charity supporting education for children across Africa.

Surpassing the previous record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, Onakoya’s determination and resilience were on full display as he continued playing until hitting the 60-hour mark. Fueled by Nigerian jollof rice, Afrobeats music, and messages of support from around the globe, Onakoya won every game against his opponent, US chess champion Shawn Martinez.

Among those who came out to cheer him on were Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido and singer Adekunle Gold. Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu also congratulated Onakoya, praising him for his achievement and the impact it will have on African children’s education.

Onakoya’s charity, Chess in Slums Africa, aims to educate 1 million children in underprivileged communities across the continent. Through his dedication to using chess to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, Onakoya is making a significant impact on the lives of many children.

This record-breaking chess marathon not only showcases Onakoya’s exceptional skills but also highlights his commitment to making a difference in the lives of African children. His story is an inspiration to many and a testament to the power of determination and passion for a cause.
